We were originally contacted by the Norfolk Island Department of Education to assist them to design and engineer a waterproof tensile membrane shade structure over a sports court at one of their schools. The cover was to be 21.6m wide x 34m long with 5m edges.
Now designing, engineering and fabricating such a structure is relatively easy for the team at SMSA. Getting things to and installing things on an island in the middle of the ocean, is somewhat more interesting. The structures fabrication was completed in late 2021 – With it taking until early 2023 to be able to get all of the necessary materials and equipment to site for the erection.
This was due to a combination of COVID shut downs and the loss of the main ferry to the island. But at the end of the day, patience won through and it has finally been completed to satisfaction of all..
